Essilor’s newest anti-reflective coating is called “Crizal Prevencia”, and unlike previous coatings, it was developed mainly to protect eyes from age-related diseases. Damage caused from UV rays is becoming common knowledge and most people have UV protection in their glasses either from a coating or the lens, or both. Crizal Prevencia is a coating that protects eyes from blue-violet light. Blue-violet light is present everywhere, including LED and fluorescent light sources. It is part of the visible light spectrum and repeated exposure can have damaging effects to retinal cells.
Crizal Prevencia filters out the blue-violet light spectrum from 415-455 nm. The studies done with the Paris Vision Institute showed that filtering out this wavelength by 20{4422c3e9d6d956ffe17c4a9703f8867adf328a271a08c00de098d82d34d0cfb5} reduced retinal cell death by 25{4422c3e9d6d956ffe17c4a9703f8867adf328a271a08c00de098d82d34d0cfb5}. Colours also look “softer” through this coating.
Crizal Prevencia is now available at Avenue Eyecare for most lens designs except 1.74 index lenses, but that will change in the next few months.
