In Canada, we’re lucky to have so many daily disposable soft multifocal contact lens options approved for myopia management. At Avenue Eyecare, the lenses we fit are backed by myopia management studies to ensure our patients are prescribed lenses that have been shown to work well on hundreds of other children.
Myopia control soft contact lenses are designed to slow the accelerated eye elongation that occurs when a child’s eye becomes more nearsighted. Although each lens is designed differently, in general, the concept is the same where the multifocal design helps incoming light rays focus in front of the retina in the periphery.
Parents often ask us which lens is best for their child and the answer is… it depends! There is always a reason why we choose different lenses depending on the patient’s prescription, age, lens comfort, and corneal shape. Here is a quick overview of top 3 myopia control dailies we prescribe:
1- Misight 1 day by Coopervision
This dual-focus lens uses ActivControl technology and is the only lens approved by the United States’ robust FDA for myopia control. It was first to market and has over 6 years of data showing sustained slowing of myopia progression and axial elongation. After several years of use, children who discontinued the lens and switched to regular contacts when they were older, were shown to have no rebound effect.
This lens is great for parents looking for a lens with a lot of data behind it with years of proven success.
2- Naturalvue Multifocal 1 day by Visioneering Technology
This lens uses an extended depth of focus design to incorporate it’s multifocal power range featuring Neurofocus Optics for an overall clear range of vision. This lens’ preliminary 2 year data (the last year of data to come) has shown equivalent results to other FDA approved myopia control options. The optics of the lens works well to mask astigmatism of up to -2.00 which is a great tool for practitioners trying to managed myopia in patients with low astigmatism.
This lens is great for patients with low astigmatism and those with have issues with haloes in other lens options.
3- Abiliti 1 day by Acuvue
This lens uses RingBoost technology to slow down myopia progression and eye elongation. This newer lens has 1 year of data confirming it’s efficacy and is unique in that the diameter is smaller and the curvature is steeper than its competitors allowing a better fit for younger children. This lens is also unique in that it’s made of a breathable silicone hydrogel material with built-in UV protection.
This is a great lens for younger patients who need a smaller, steeper, and more breathable lens.
