The field of myopia management is continuing to evolve with new products and treatment options for our patients. We’re excited to launch the new spectacle lens options MyoCare and Myocare S by the well known lens maker, Zeiss.
The MyoCare lens has special ring-shaped optical structures on its surface. It uses C.A.R.E. (Cylindrical Annular Refractive Elements) Technology to slow down the progression of myopia. The rings are incorporated into the lens making alternating defocus and correction zones. This helps slow down the lengthening and myopia progression of the eye.
The lens also features a unique full edge to edge treatment zone, several indices of refraction to choose from (1.5, 1.59,1.60), Zeiss Duravision premium coatings, UV400 protection, and a customized design for 7-9 year olds (MyoCare) vs 10 years and up (MyoCare S). The MyoCare lens is tailored for patients under 10 years old with a 7mm diameter central clear zone and higher powered defocus rings (+4.6D). The Myocare S lens is tailored for patients over 10 years old with a 9mm diameter central clear zone and slightly lower powered defocus rings (+3.8D).
The 12 month results in a 2 year prospective trial:
MyoCare lens showed a reduction of -0.22D in myopia and axial length of 0.14mm in 7-9 year olds. The MyoCare S showed a reduction of -0.33D in myopia and axial length of 0.13mm in 10-12 year olds.
These are promising results and it will be interesting to see how well this lens performs in years to come in comparison to other spectacle lens options. The customized design and thinner indexes to come in the future are a welcome addition for our young myopia patients.
