Optometrists across Canada are joining forces to educate the public about children’s vision because October is Children’s Vision Month. Many children are not aware they are living with vision conditions that impact their development, education, and quality of life.
Did you know 80{4422c3e9d6d956ffe17c4a9703f8867adf328a271a08c00de098d82d34d0cfb5} of learning depends on vision? Did you know 1 in 4 school-aged children have a vision problem? A recent survey by the CAO (Canadian Association of Optometrists) reported that 61{4422c3e9d6d956ffe17c4a9703f8867adf328a271a08c00de098d82d34d0cfb5} of parents thought they could tell whether or not their child is experiencing problems with vision. Unfortunately, many serious eye conditions do not have symptoms and may only become apparent when it is in advanced stages. I always remind parents that their child thinks the way they see is normal because they have no comparison.
The CAO recommends children to see a doctor of optometry for an exam at 6 months, 3 years old, before starting kindergarten, and annually throughout the school years for optimal development.
