What is Ortho-K?
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K), also known as corneal reshaping therapy, is a non-surgical procedure that improves your vision while you sleep. Custom designed rigid gas permeable lenses are used to reshape the front of the eye (the cornea) overnight, during which the lenses painlessly reshape the cornea by flattening its surface in order to correct mild to moderate nearsightedness and astigmatism. When you remove the lenses in the morning, you will be able to see clearly throughout the day without the aid of glasses or contacts. If Ortho-K is discontinued, the effects are completely reversible as the cornea and prescription returns to its original shape and power.
How can this help kids with increasing nearsightedness?
Progressive nearsightedness is becoming an increasing problem in children. This epidemic is getting worse with the increase in near work in day to day life, including reading, computer and handheld device use. What can we do to slow down this epidemic? Many published studies document reduced to no progression with children using ortho-k treatment. Research has shown that, in the long run, children under the age of 18 wearing these lenses are able to control and slow down their nearsightedness progression by up to 94%.
Am I a Suitable Candidate?
Is your child’s nearsightedness getting worse every year?
Are you looking for an alternative to glasses, daytime contact lenses, or laser refractive surgery?
Are you unable to wear contact lenses due to allergies?
Do you live an active lifestyle and prefer playing sports without glasses or daytime lenses?
What are the Risks?
Ortho-k is a safe and reversible procedure. Similar to other contact lenses, these custom designed rigid lenses can increase the risk of eye infections and cause some discomfort while adapting to wearing a hard lens for the first couple of weeks. However, at Avenue Eyecare, we make it our priority to thoroughly educate our patients on the proper care of their eyes while undergoing Ortho-k.
How Much Does it Cost?
Booking a pre-assessment consult with Avenue Eyecare is free if you have had a recent eye exam. We can decide if your child is a suitable candidate. If you decide to proceed with the Ortho-k treatment at this point, the full cost will be $2000.00 to $2400.00.
