The options for myopia management continually grow and change…it’s an exciting area of practice that keeps us on our toes! Hoya Canada launched a new spectacle option called the MiyoSmart lens. It was developed by Hoya in partnership with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2018 and was awarded the Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva.
This myopia control lens uses D.I.M.S technology (Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments) where the central 9mm of the lens has the patient’s full prescription correction for clear vision and is surrounded by several defocus segments where each segment has a power of +3.50D creating an area of “myopic defocus”. These “myopic defocus” points help with slowing down the progression of myopia.
Studies show the lens slows down the progression of myopia by 60% in a 2 year study of myopic (nearsighted) children between 8-13 years old. We are one of the first clinics to offer the MiyoSmart lens in Greater Vancouver and have seen our patients adapt very quickly to the lens since we’ve introduced it over 2 months ago.
